Selection Guide: Kaolin vs. Ball Clay
Both are essential ceramic raw materials with different primary functions.
Kaolin Clay
Whiteness FocusAlso known as China Clay. Primary function: whiteness and alumina contribution. Provides white foundation and structural properties through alumina content.
Ball Clay

FG-K90 — Ultra-White Kaolin
Whiteness Advantage
90.0 whiteness delivers the whitest fired body in Goway's kaolin range. Low iron oxide (0.45%) ensures pure color development without yellow or brown tints.
Alumina Foundation
At 35.5% Al₂O₃, FG-K90 provides excellent ceramic body structure. Higher alumina content contributes to improved fired strength and thermal stability.
Low Iron & Titanium
Combined Fe₂O₃ (0.45%) and TiO₂ (0.09%) below 0.55% ensures clean, consistent color response in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres.

FG-K86 — Balanced Performance Kaolin
Ultra-Low Titanium
Only 0.02% TiO₂ — the lowest in Goway's range — eliminates titanium-related discoloration. Critical for bright white bodies in reducing atmospheres.
High Flux Activity
Highest K₂O content (3.17%) acts as a flux, lowering sintering temperature requirements and improving vitrification for energy cost reduction.
Cost-Performance Balance
Delivers near-FG-K90 whiteness (86.8 vs 90.0) at more accessible pricing. Ideal for formulations where consistency matters more than absolute whiteness.

Technical Tip
For bodies targeting L* 89–92 in reducing atmospheres, FG-K86 is preferred. Ultra-low TiO₂ prevents gray-blue discoloration from Ti-Fe interactions under reducing conditions.
FG-B82 — High Plasticity Ball Clay
Excellent Plasticity
Superior plasticity for complex forming operations. High plasticity improves workability, reduces cracking during drying, and enhances green body strength.
Body Binding
High L.O.I of 12.5% indicates rich organic matter content that contributes to binding properties and reduces defects during shaping.

Value-tier ball clay providing excellent plasticity at competitive pricing. Ideal for bodies where fired whiteness is not the primary concern.

FG-B88 — High Whiteness Ball Clay
Premium Whiteness
88.0 whiteness — highest among ball clays in Goway's range. Bridges the gap between standard ball clays and kaolins for lighter body colors.
High Silica Content
54.2% SiO₂ contributes to body strength and thermal expansion properties. Higher silica improves scratch resistance and durability in vitrified bodies.
Bridge Product
Unique position: higher plasticity than kaolin while achieving 88 whiteness. Ideal for bodies needing both workability and light color.
